About The Reinvention Roadmap
Last week I finished a great book, Reinvention Roadmap: Break the Rules to Get the Job You Want and Career You Deserve by Liz Ryan. I highly recommend the book to Job seekers.
My former coworker bought me this book as a going away gift. She knows I LOVE this kind of stuff; self-help, professional development, career advice, business advice. This book did not disappoint.
I QUIT. Time to Reinvention My Career Path
I have officially quit my job as a teacher. I loved working with the kiddos and had a great position within the school. I am proud of the work we did at the school. We graduated over 100 students that needed us. I know we made a noticeable impact on each student we worked with as they made a positive impact on me; however I believe that I personally need to expand my reach.
One important point that Ryan makes is that it’s important to understand that my time spent in this position was not wasted. No work you have every done to help others was ever wasted. It was just a part of your journey and helped you regain your ‘MOJO’ or confidence.
How You Can Use the Reinvention Roadmap
The Reinvention Roadmap is a motivational guide for job seekers and entrepreneurs. In her book she explains how to take control of your career and why it’s so important that you run your career like you run a business. Rather than sitting back and allowing others to make the decisions in your career life, you must be proactive and look for meaningful work that keeps you wanting to wake up, dress up, and show up.
She explains how important it is to find meaningful work with people you enjoy being around. We spend a lot of time at our jobs, and if we are unhappy we are likely to be less productive. Whereas, if we enjoy the work and it meets more than just a financial need, we are likely to be very powerful and successful. We want to do our best because it’s work we are excited about with people we enjoy working with.
Ryan encourages job seekers to not just take the first job that’s offered to you even though that may be tempting. This is how people get ‘stuck’ in a job they don’t enjoy. In order to understand what kind of work would suit you best you have to do some tough thinking that this book can guide you through. You may not know all the answers, but at least it can get you thinking about your 5-year or 10-year plans and your purpose in life.
My Favorite Quote from Reinvention Roadmap
My favorite quote from this book is one I hope you’ll carry with you this week, “Only the people that ‘GET’ you, Deserve You.” (Ryan).
Take some risks and continue to reach out to help others. Not everyone will want what you have to offer, but that’s OK. Only the people that get you, deserve you. Go find your people.
Have a great Monday everyone!
